It’s an idea I picked up in Norway, the idea makes use of what many students do a Gap year after they have finished year 12. It’s in line with what many students do, that is traveling around Australia doing various jobs, not just fruit picking; as important as that is, the alternative is being involved in major infrastructure projects such a Very Fast Train Network as is working on rivers & drainage or working with the huge Tunneling machines creating tunnels for very fast trains going under ground on approaching a built up area so as to avoid noise and ripping down homes. These tunnels could also be used for purifying and the storage of water and who knows what else.

The idea is to give Citizens an opportunity to work for the common good, for which they may find a niche in employment. The personal reward would be a free tertiary education or a low interest Home or Business loan. No doubt there will be all sorts of naysayer but when you get a group of young people evolved in a non competitive round table think tank solutions are often simpler than first thought.

There is also an opportunity to work with the Military opening up their expertise and equipment (Boats, Aircraft and heavy machinery) benefiting in way not yet realised. As an example, some years ago the military was involved in an eradication of Feral Cats that exercise was a success, they got rid of some enormous Feral Cats, resulting in saving our endangered wild life whilst practicin logistics. As for the Citizens Service there is no limit, though no doubt current politicians/lawyers will find plenty to criticize, they and their ‘mates’ will wing about the cost, well an ICAC if done properly it would cover much of the schema.
